GSC professor starts a radio club

Have you dreamed of work­ing for a radio sta­tion? You can get in on the begin­ning of one if you join GSC’s bud­ding radio club.

The club, begun and advised by David Smith, media stud­ies pro­fes­sor, will take advan­tage of the new sound stu­dio in Aca­d­e­mic 4 and will broad­cast online.

Smith started look­ing into start­ing a radio club early this semes­ter, and he learned quickly that inter­est was high.

Within a few days of word-of-mouth con­ver­sa­tions and emails, Smith had more than 15 stu­dents and a hand­ful of fac­ulty inter­ested in pro­duc­ing pro­gram­ming for a station.

To get some­thing going, Smith asked Cara Ray, direc­tor of Stu­dent Life, if a club could be formed to sup­port the station—similar, in a way, to the The Com­pass. This resulted in the for­ma­tion of dB – The GSC Radio Club.

“We ulti­mately want to pro­duce orig­i­nal con­tent for the entire com­mu­nity,” Smith said.

Some of the sug­gested pro­grams include: a sports com­men­tary show, local musi­cian spot­light show, radio dra­mas, lit­er­ary read­ings and, of course, a vari­ety of music pro­gram­ming, but Smith is open to any ideas.

Smith said the mis­sion of dB – The GSC Radio Club is to pro­duce high-quality con­tent that is timely, rel­e­vant and engag­ing to the stu­dents, fac­ulty and staff of Gainesville State Col­lege and North Geor­gia, and to allow radio staff mem­bers, audio pro­duc­ers and con­tent cre­ators a place to grow and work within a team environment.

Some of the first goals of the club will be to set the foun­da­tion of an online radio pres­ence for Gainesville State Col­lege and the North Geor­gia com­mu­ni­ties by pro­duc­ing pod­casts and mak­ing them avail­able on-demand from The Com­pass web site at gsccompass.org or at gscmedia.org, which is owned by the Com­mu­ni­ca­tion, Media Stud­ies and Jour­nal­ism Depart­ment.  The next goal is to pro­duce orig­i­nal content.

Smith and the mem­bers of dB will be seek­ing sug­ges­tions for pro­gram­ming from all areas of the GSC and North Geor­gia com­mu­ni­ties.  If your club, orga­ni­za­tion or group would like to pro­duce or help in the pro­duc­tion of an online radio pro­gram for next fall, please con­tact Smith at dsmith@gsc.edu.
