About us
The Compass is the student newspaper of Gainesville State College, the Gainesville campus, located in Oakwood, Ga. We are members of the Georgia College Press Association, and participate in the Better Newspaper Contest two-year division. We have received many awards in the General Excellence and Individual Awards categories.
We are also members of the College Media Association/Associated Collegiate Press.
The Compass is published at least three times a semester. The staff strives to inform, educate, and entertain the members of the GSC community, and we are open to all ideas and opinions held by members of that community. The paper does not necessarily reflect the opinions of GSC’s administration, faculty or staff. All ideas expressed in Opinion articles are those of the individual writers and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of newspaper editors and staff members.
Our office is located in the Student Center, within the office of Student Life, across from the bookstore. We encourage participation and contributions from all GSC community members. You can reach us at compass@gsc.edu.
The paper is staffed by students in the newspaper production class, JOUR 2000, and other contributors/former staff members. In addition to being a club/organization funded by student activities fees, we are a class that meets twice a week. The editor-in-chief, appointed by the newspaper adviser, receives a scholarship each semester he or she is editor. Staff are unpaid, but may receive small stipends if money is available.
Years ago, our paper was known as The Anchor.
Our sister newspaper at the Gainesville State College, Oconee campus is The Voice. We exchange content and collaborate from time-to-time.
Code of ethics
As members of the College Media Association, we support that group’s Code of Ethics, which states in part:
Freedom of expression and debate by means of a free and vigorous student media are essential to the effectiveness of an educational community in a democratic society. This implies the obligation of the student media to provide a forum for the expression of opinion – not only those opinions differing from established university or administrative policy, but those at odds with the media staff beliefs or opinions as well.
